vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">\n<strong>Albedo:<\/strong> the ratio of solar radiation on a surface to the amount of that radiation that is reflected back to the atmosphere.\n\n<strong>Climate:<\/strong> the pattern of atmospheric conditions in a given area over a period of several years to thousands of years.\n\n<strong>Evapotranspiration:<\/strong> the sum of evaporation and plant transpiration from the Earth\u2019s land and ocean surface to the atmosphere.\n\n<strong>Floodplain:<\/strong> A flat area alongside a stream or river that is subject to flooding.\n\n<strong>Hydrologic cycle:<\/strong> The continuous process by which water is circulated throughout the Earth and its atmosphere.\n\n<strong>Impermeable surfaces:<\/strong> A surface composed of any material that impedes or prevents natural infiltration of water into the soil.\n\n<strong>Subsidence:<\/strong> The gradual sinking of land masses due to a variety of causes.\n\n<strong>Urban Boundary layer (UBL):<\/strong> surrounds the city and includes all of the heated and polluted air above the skyline.\n\n<strong>Urban Canopy Layer (UCL):<\/strong> The atmosphere within an accumulation of buildings, trees and other objects in an urban area.\n\n<strong>Urban Canyon:<\/strong> the area in a city that can trap reflected light within the walls of the buildings.\n\n<strong>Urban Dust Dome (UDD): <\/strong>\u00a0The dome of polluted air that forms over a city during calm conditions as a result of the urban heat island effect that traps gaseous and fine particulate matter.\n\n<strong>Urban Heat Island (UHI):<\/strong> The generally warmer urban temperatures compared to those over surrounding, non-urban, areas.\n\n<strong>Urban Sprawl:<\/strong> the spreading of urban developments (such as houses and shopping centers) on undeveloped land near a city.\n\n<strong>Watershed:<\/strong> the area of land where all of the water that falls in it and drains off of it goes to a common outlet.\n\n<strong>Weather:<\/strong> The short-term changes in the temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloud cover, wind direction and speed, and other conditions at a given time and place.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2622\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2622\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed fa fa-caret-right\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fa fa-caret-up\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-toggle-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Watershed Management and Governance<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2622\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2622\"><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>United States Environmental Protection Agency:<\/strong> federal agency charged with monitoring and enforcing environmental regulation such as the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, as well as other national policies.\n\n<strong>CWA<\/strong>: Clean Water Act; 1972 federal law created to control the discharge of point-source pollutants; creates a permitting system for the discharge of pollutants as a result of industry as well as a monitoring system.\n\n<strong>NPDES:<\/strong> National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System; builds upon the Clean Water Act by serving as the permitting system, which works to enforce the standards created by the Clean Water Act.\n\n<strong>Superfund:<\/strong>\u00a0Federal government program that designates and provides financial support for the cleanup of hazardous waste and contaminants.\n\n<strong>NGO:<\/strong> Non-governmental Organization<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2623\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2623\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed fa fa-caret-right\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fa fa-caret-up\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-toggle-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Urbanization and Gentrification<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2623\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2623\"><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>Economics:<\/strong> the science that deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services, or the material welfare of humankind.\n\n<strong>Gentrification:<\/strong> the buying and renovation of houses and stores in deteriorated urban neighborhoods by upper- or middle-income families or individuals, raising property values but often displacing low-income families and small businesses.\n\n<strong>Socioeconomic:<\/strong> of, relating to, or signifying the combination or interaction of social and economic factors.\n\n<strong>Sustainability:<\/strong> avoidance of the depletion of natural resources to maintain an ecological balance.\n\n<strong>Tax incentives<\/strong>: a government measure that is intended to encourage individuals and businesses to spend money or to save money by reducing the amount of tax that they must pay.\n\n<strong>Urbanization:<\/strong> An increase in a population in cities versus rural areas.\n\n<strong>Triple Bottom Line:<\/strong> says that true sustainability is created through the integration of social, economic, and environmental efforts.\n\n<strong>Urban Tree Canopy:<\/strong> The layer of tree cover above a given area.\n\n<strong>Watershed:<\/strong> A land area that channels rainfall and snow melt to creeks, streams, and rivers, and eventually to outflow points such as reservoirs, bays, and the ocean.\n\n<strong>Community Science:<\/strong> typically refers to research collaborations between scientists and volunteers, particularly (but not exclusively) to expand opportunities for scientific data collection and to provide access to scientific information for community members.\n\n<strong>Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO):<\/strong> The untreated or partially treated human and industrial waste, toxic materials, and debris as well as stormwater.\n\n<strong>Combined Sewer System (CSS):<\/strong> The collection of rainwater runoff, domestic sewage, and industrial wastewater into one pipe.\n\n<strong>EPA:<\/strong> Environmental protection agency- a governmental organization that aims to protect human health and the environment\n\n<strong>Green Infrastructure:<\/strong> incorporates both the natural environment and engineered systems to provide clean water, conserve ecosystem values and functions, and provide a wide array of benefits to people and wildlife.\n\n<strong>Green space:<\/strong> an area of grass, trees, or other vegetation set apart for recreational or aesthetic purposes in an otherwise urban environment.\n\n<strong>NGOs:<\/strong> Non-governmental organization- any non-profit, voluntary citizens\u2019 group which is organized on a local, national or international level<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Watershed Basics Albedo: the ratio of solar radiation on a surface to the amount of that radiation that is reflected back to the atmosphere.
